![]() ![]() ![]() Under the Hawthorn Tree was her debut novel. Under the Hawthorn Tree is now considered a classic, and though Dublin-born Conlon McKenna has written many more books since, it’s the one that her name will always be synonymous with. Suddenly, history was rendered not in black and white, but technicolour, and the pain of the ‘great hunger’ could be understood. Because, why would they at such a young age?īut faced with the stories of the three children in Under the Hawthorn Tree, written by bestselling author Marita Conlon McKenna, Irish children found themselves understanding the impact of such a terrible moment in the past. It gave them a connection to an event in Irish history that they might not have thought too deeply about before. ![]() The book was a dark one – it was about the Famine – but its importance to Irish children was because of this very thing. FOR IRISH ADULTS who went to school in the 1990s there is a childhood book that, when mentioned, will usually elicit expressions of deep nostalgia. ![]()

![]() Much better than the previous portrait artist-that fellow we had the other day. “I could alter your cravat, as long as it’s more or less the same size, but I’d need another session to finish it.” Outwardly, my face ached with the polite smile I’d maintained for the past two and a half hours. “And if I chose a different cravat . . .” ![]() “What do you think? You could add that, couldn’t you?” “I might have some silver embroidery done about the wrists,” he said. All in all, it was a disarming quality for a creature who could murder me without rescheduling his tea. He was astonishingly vain even by fair folk standards, which is like saying a pond is unusually wet, or a bear surprisingly hairy. Oil paint needs days to dry between layers, and he had trouble understanding I couldn’t just swap his entire outfit for another he liked better. The trick with Gadfly was persuading him to wear the same clothes for every session. I had nearly perfected the color of Gadfly’s silk jacket. ![]() ![]() MY PARLOR smelled of linseed oil and spike lavender, and a dab of lead tin yellow glistened on my canvas. ![]() ![]() Only Maggie wants to avoid rumors from starting, and being involved with a guy like Wyatt will bring just that.Īnd Wyatt wants to avoid the drama and he comes to find out that being with Maggie, may result in exactly what he’s trying to stay away from. One problem with this issue is that there wasn’t much effort put into making the reader care about the main character.Īnother problem is that there is a fairly obvious plot twist that happens at the end, and anyone who has ever seen a movie or TV show dealing with people who can see the future will know what is going to happen 15 pages before the end. One of the things that made the first series stand out was that while the stories may have super-powered elements in them, they were really about the characters in those stories. Volume 2 Issue #1 deals with a young woman who thinks she may be able to see into the future through her dreams, and decides she has to try to save someone she saw in one of her visions. If you’ve never heard of Demo before, the basic pitch is that the stories are about normal young people who discover they have super-powers. Unfortunately, I was not blown away by this particular issue. I generally like Brian Wood‘s writing, I generally like Beck Cloonan‘s art, and I generally enjoyed the first series of Demo stories that the two creators released a few years ago, so I was looking forward to the new volume of stories.
